Tigers Jaw, c'est le secret bien gardé de la Pennsylvanie et le péché mignon des HxC kids du monde entier. Mais avec un second album aussi réussi, ce n'est même plus un péché. Le très jeune groupe redonne à l'indie/emo des 90's ses lettres de noblesse avec des chansons mi-douces mi-amères à faire pleurer un chasseur alaskain du Tea Party. Entretien avec Ben, chanteur/guitariste de cet adorable club de nerds insensibles à la hype qui les entoure.
Romain J. : Salut Ben, merci pour l'interview. Peux-tu te présenter et présenter les autres membres de Tigers Jaw ?
Ben Walsh : Je m'appelle Ben, je chante et joue de la guitare. Adam chante et fait aussi de la guitare, Brianna chante et joue du clavier, Dennis chante un peu et joue de la basse et Pat devrait chanter mais joue de la batterie.
Peux-tu nous dire un peu comment s'est formé Tigers Jaw ?
Adam et moi étions amis depuis longtemps quand il m'a demandé d'enregistrer quelques morceaux avec lui. On les a enregistrés dans son sous-sol durant les vacances d'hiver de 2005. Ces morceaux sont devenus les premières chansons de Tigers Jaw. On a rencontré Brianna par un ami commun et elle nous a rejoints, remplaçant l'ancien claviériste. Quelque temps après, on a rencontré notre âme sœur musicale, un groupe nommé Three Man Cannon. Pat et Dennis font partie de ce groupe, on a fait quelques concerts avec eux et finalement on leur a demandé d'intégrer le groupe. Mike May fut notre batteur pendant un bon moment avant ça.
D'où vient le nom du groupe ?
Le nom Tigers Jaw vient d'une phrase d'une chanson de The Microphones. Il y a un groupe qui s'appelle Tiger Saw et l'histoire de leur nom est beaucoup plus cool. Un jour, Adam de Tigers Jaw et Dylan de Tiger Saw ont fait un duel en chanson. Je crois que ça a fait égalité.
Quels groupes et quelles motivations vous ont donné envie de faire de la musique ?
Pour moi, ce fut les groupes locaux de la région de Scranton [Pennsylvanie, NDLR.], nommés Okay Paddy et The Sw!ms. Le label Prison Jazz Records, aujourd'hui défunt, avait une belle collection de groupes locaux talentueux.
Comment allez-vous tous maintenant que le disque est enfin sorti ?
On est tous en super forme, merci ! On est tous encore en cours donc là on prépare nos exams finaux. J'ai trouvé un job temporaire dans un petit commerce donc tout va bien.
Dans quelle mesure Two Worlds est-il différent de votre premier album ?
Notre album éponyme était une accumulation de vieilles chansons qu'on avait écrites alors que Two Worlds, à l'exception d'un morceau, fut écrit sur une seule période.
Comment s'est passé le processus de création ? Aviez-vous quelque chose de précis en tête de ce que vous vouliez avec ce disque ?
Adam et moi avons l'habitude d'écrire séparément, mais lorsqu'on a travaillé sur les chansons de Two Worlds, on a réussi à utiliser une approche plus collaborative de la part de l'ensemble du groupe. Beaucoup de nos morceaux d'avant Two Worlds furent écrits avant même que Pat et Dennis rejoignent le groupe donc on n'avait pas pu avoir ce niveau de collaboration. On n'avait rien de précis en tête. On écrit simplement de la musique qu'on aime jouer.
Quelle est la signification du titre de l'album ?
Le titre vient du thème de la dualité. Adam a écrit le title track et a ainsi trouvé ce titre d'album. Il a donné une bonne explication sur notre blog.
De quoi parle le disque ?
Il y a donc ce thème de la dualité qui joue un rôle important, mais je ne dirais pas que l'album dans son ensemble a un thème ou un message unificateur. Chaque chanson porte une expérience, une histoire ou un sentiment différent qui lui est associé.
Qu'est-ce que ça a changé pour Tigers Jaw d'être sur Run For Cover ?
Absolument rien. Jeff de Run For Cover a été extrêmement conciliant et nous a donné une liberté de création totale. On est le même groupe, on a simplement un label qui nous supporte dur. Plus de labels devraient opérer comme Run For Cover, où ça ressemble plus à de l'amitié qu'à autre chose.
Il semblerait que tout le monde chez Run For Cover soit un nerd d'Harry Potter. J'ai toujours pas vu le nouveau film, il est bien ?
Je ne l'ai pas encore vu non plus, mais j'espère le voir bientôt. L'été dernier, en tournée, notre voiture s'est faite embarquer par la fourrière pendant qu'on regardait le sixième film d'Harry Potter à Washington D.C.. On a cru que la voiture et tout notre équipement à l'intérieur avaient été volés. Heureusement on l'a trouvée à la fourrière un peu plus loin, mais on a dû payer une amende surréaliste.
Il y a des photos de vous avez un skateboard, qui en fait ? Vous êtes bons ?
L'été dernier j'ai rendu hommage à ma jeunesse en réessayant de skater. Je ne suis pas bon du tout, mais j'aime beaucoup malgré tout. Brianna était vraiment forte. Pat et Dennis ont appris à en faire il y a pas longtemps. Adam a une super board mais ne s'en sert malheureusement pas beaucoup.
Peux-tu nous parler un peu de Captain, We're Sinking ?
Captain, We're Sinking est un super groupe. Adam et moi en faisions partie au tout début. Quelques bases sur ce groupe : ils ont eu un tas de batteurs différents, ils sont super calés en science-fiction, certains d'entre eux fument trop, ils perdent/cassent leur équipement tous les quatre matins et ils sont super cool à voir en live. Et puis ils sont plutôt beaux gosses.
Vous serez au Royaume-Uni et en Irlande en janvier, c'est votre première fois en Europe ? Vous avez hâte ?
C'est notre première fois en Europe, oui ! La seule fois où on est sorti des États-Unis, c'était quand on a joué au Canada l'hiver dernier. On est plutôt excité mais je crois qu'on n'a pas encore vraiment réalisé, pour ma part en tous cas. Et puis je n'ai jamais pris l'avion, donc il me tarde pour ça aussi.
Des projets de dates dans le reste de l'Europe ?
Pour l'instant, ce n'est pas prévu, mais on aimerait. On fera en sorte que ça arrive. Espérons que ce ne soit pas dans trop longtemps.
Quoi d'autre de prévu pour Tigers Jaw en 2011 ? Des sorties, des tournées ?
On n'est pas sûr encore. On travaille sur de nouveaux morceaux mais je ne sais pas quand ça sortira vraiment. La plupart des projets de tournées sont en train d'être planifiés, mais on fera un week-end de trois jours conjointement avec la tournée Hostage Calm/O Pioneers!!!.

Romain J.: Hello Ben and thank you for taking some time to answer my questions! Could you introduce yourself and your bandmates first?
Ben Walsh: My name is Ben and I sing and play guitar. Adam also sings and pays guitar, Brianna sings and plays keyboard, Dennis sings some and plays bass, and Pat should sing, and plays drums.
Could you tell us a bit how Tigers Jaw came to life?
Adam and I had been friends for a while when he asked me to record some songs with him. We recorded them in his basement over winter break of 2005. Those songs became the first Tigers Jaw songs. We met Brianna through a friend and she joined, taking over for the first keyboard player. After playing for a while, we met our musical soulmates; a band called Three Man Cannon. Pat and Dennis are in Three Man Cannon, and we played some shows with them and eventually asked them to join. Mike May played drums for a while there though.
Where does the band name come from?
The name Tigers Jaw comes from a lyric found in a song by The Microphones. There is a band called Tiger Saw that has a cooler name origin. One time, Adam from Tigers Jaw and Dylan from Tiger Saw had a song showdown. I think it was a tie.
Which bands and which motivations made you want to start music?
For me, it was local bands from the Scranton area [Pennsylvania, ed.], namely Okay Paddy and The Sw!ms. The now defunct Prison Jazz Records had a nice collective of talented local bands.
Alright, end of the introduction! So how are you all doing, now that the new record is out?
We are all doing fine, thanks! All of us are in school, so we are getting ready for final exams. I just got a seasonal job at a retail store and it's pretty cool.
How different is Two Worlds compared to your first album?
Our self-titled record was an accumulation of earlier songs we had up to that point, as opposed to Two Worlds which, apart from one song, was written in the same time period.
How did the making process go? Did you have something precise in mind when it comes to what you wanted to do with that record?
Adam and I tend to write songs separately, but when we were working on the songs for Two Worlds we were able to utilize more of a collaborative approach from the whole band. Many of our songs prior to these were written before Pat and Dennis officially joined, so we weren't previously able to have that level of collaboration. We didn't have anything precise in mind. We write music that we enjoy playing.
Where does the title come from?
The title is derived from themes of duality. Adam wrote the title track and therefore came up with the album's name. He gave a good explanation of the title that can be found on our blog.
What does this album talk about?
Again, the theme of duality plays a role, but I wouldn't say the album as a whole has a unifying theme or message. Each song has a different experience, story, or feeling associated with it.
What does it change for Tigers Jaw to be on Run For Cover?
Absolutely nothing. Jeff at Run For Cover has been extremely accommodating and has given our creative freedom the utmost respect. We are the same band, we just have a very supportive label behind us. More labels should operate like Run For Cover, where it feels more like a friendship than anything.
It looks like everyone at Run For Cover is a Harry Potter geek. I still haven't seen the new movie, is it any good?
I also have yet to see it, but look forward to seeing it soon. Last summer, on tour, our car got towed while we were seeing the sixth HP movie in Washington D.C.. We thought the car and all our gear was stolen. Luckily we found it in a tow zone a few blocks away, but we had to pay an unreasonable fine.
So there are a few pics of you with a skateboard, who skates? Are you good?
This past summer I paid homage to my youth by trying to skate again. I'm not good at all, but it's a lot of fun regardless. Brianna used to be great at it. Pat and Dennis started learning recently. Adam has a nice board but doesn't get much use out of it unfortunately.
Could you tell us a bit about Captain, We're Sinking?
Captain, We're Sinking is a great band. Actually, Adam and I used to be in it in one of it's earliest forms. Here are the basics: They've gone through a lot of drummers, they know a lot about sci-fi, some of them smoke too much, they lose/break equipment like it's their job, they're incredibly fun to watch live, and they're pretty handsome.
You guys and girl are heading to the UK + Ireland this month, is that your first time in Europe? Are you excited?
It is the first time for us in Europe! The only other time we've been out of the country was last winter, when we played in Canada. We are quite excited, but I don't think the true realization has set in yet, for me anyway. Also, I've never flown before so I'm looking forward to that too.
Any plans to come to mainland Europe?
As of right now, we don't have a plan, but we want to! We'll make it happen. Hopefully in the not to distant future.
What else is in store for Tigers Jaw next year? Any releases, tours?
We're not sure. We've been working on some new material but I'm not sure how soon it will materialize into a release. Most touring plans are still being worked out, but we will be doing a 3 day weekend in conjunction with the early 2011 Hostage Calm/O Pioneers! tour.
